FEATURE · ADAPTIVE PLANS

Your plan listens. To your watch, and to you.

Adaptation isn't a feature we bolted on. It's how the plan works. Every week, TrainPlan rebuilds your next block from your actual training data, not a frozen template.

Did you run it, skip it, or only get halfway?

A skipped Wednesday doesn't disappear into the void. The plan shifts Thursday's intensity, shortens the weekend long run, or keeps the week intact if you still nail Sunday.

What your heart rate said vs. what we asked.

A tempo that landed way above the target zone tells us you're under-recovered. A tempo that felt like a jog tells us the fitness moved. Both change next week.

Recovery signals over weeks, not last night.

Two bad sleeps won't derail the plan. Two weeks of declining HRV will. The plan watches trend lines, not single readings, which is the only way this works honestly.

WHAT ADAPTATION LOOKS LIKE

The plan proposes. You decide.

A change never lands silently. You see the current shape, the proposed shape and the reasoning before anything moves.

  • TrainPlan schedule screen showing a training week and a proposed plan change with the reasoning behind it
Schedule Your week, with the proposed plan change and its reasoning waiting at the top.
  • TrainPlan plan screen showing an 18-week marathon block with base, build, peak and taper phases on a timeline
Your plan The full block to race day — base, build, peak and taper on one timeline.
  • TrainPlan plan phase screen describing the build phase with adjustable start and end weeks
Plan phase What each phase is for, how long it runs, and where you can move its edges.

HOW IT FEELS

The plan you open tomorrow isn't the plan you opened yesterday.

Every Sunday night — or whenever your last activity of the week lands — the plan regenerates. You get a small banner on Monday morning listing what changed and why. Three key things about how this works in practice:

  • Small changes happen quietly. A half-kilometre shorter tempo doesn’t merit a 500-word rationale. The in-app summary says what it needs to.
  • Big changes get the full explanation. Dropping a threshold session in favour of an easy run? You see the evidence: the HRV line, the sleep chart, the completion record.
  • You can override any of it. Don’t agree with the change? Revert it with one tap and leave a note the engine reads when it plans next week.

FAQ

How adaptation actually works.

It can. Often it doesn’t need to — if you’re nailing the plan, the plan doesn’t touch much. Adaptation is event-driven, not scheduled.

You’ll log sessions manually and rate how they felt. Adaptation runs weekly rather than daily because the plan has less signal to work with. Most people connect a watch within two weeks.

Yes. That’s why every change is explained and revertible. If the plan makes a call you disagree with, override it and the engine learns from your correction for future weeks.

No — it means the plan gets correct over time. If your data says you can handle more, it adds more. If it says you’re running flat, it pulls back.
